Eastleigh (H) - National League - 31st October 2026

Claude, create me a National League football match, make no mistakes.

After Tuesday's comeback, our sixth straight win in the league, I'm looking forward to this one and fully expecting us to win. I can't remember the last time I woke up on a Saturday with such optimism. Halifax gifted us the now infamous on-air insult ‘Cumbrian C**t’, possibly the first time in history the c-word has featured in a two-word salvo and not been the most offensive part of it (especially for the Lancashire-beyond-the-Sands brigade). I've never really thought of myself as Cumbrian, a county made up mainly of nothing, save for that place up the top, a weird bit in the west, some money in the middle and a few hills. Barra is just Barra, innit. I'm here for the Furness separatists.

On a day famous for ghosts with unresolved grievances coming back to haunt you, Eastleigh can't be relishing the long journey north to a ground that has been less than fertile for them in recent years. Who can forget that FA Cup tie in 2009: the Walker injury-time thunderbastard, the flying goggles, the red bra? There's a more modest away following today, in all respects, but no attendance shaming here. It's a long trip to face a team in form, and I understand why you might be reluctant. The spectre of Jonny Williams lines up for Eastleigh, and I'm sure he turns up here five times a season.

In our ranks, there's another new matchday signing, with Pijus Otegbayo straight into the back four. He is, of course, absolutely massive. You must be at least this tall to defend in a Barrow shirt. Perhaps the unfamiliarity played a part in the first chance, as Blair, completely unmarked at the back post, slices a volley for a hotdog when he really should have scored. It feels like we're binge-watching Blair catastrophes as he drags another opportunity well wide of the target. I'm sure he's better than this, right? It takes us 15 minutes to carve out an opening, with Oakley forcing a save from part-time club bouncer Townsend. It's a half low on real quality: Jonny Williams tries a long-range effort with Winterbottom off his line but only finds the Bluebird Club roof, and our short corner routine ends in an air shot before Latty-Fairweather fires wide.. The Family Stand stakes a claim for a shirt, exquisitely trapping the ball in its rafters It's that type of half, pure National League goodness. We've shaded it, but it's goalless at the break.

The second half starts as the first ended. Thompson is put through by Allen but blazes over, though he was offside anyway. On the hour, the crowd looks over to the touchline for our routine triple substitution. On come Moons™, Marriott and another ghost from the past, Kouyate. We are anything but predictable. Moons gets straight into the action, whipping over a wicked cross that sees Thompson and Eweka challenge for the ball. It's a nasty clash of heads, with Eweka coming off worse, and there's a lengthy stoppage before he is eventually stretchered off. Here's hoping he's back on his feet soon. I'm not sure it's the best look for Bluey to be absurdly trotting over with a bag of medical supplies, but it happened. OK, it's all hands on deck, let's be generous.

With the game back under way, we decide to condense all our attacking intent into the final quarter. Kouyate's fine work down the left fashions a chance to cross for Thompson, whose delivery finds the head of Cameron, but he can't get his effort on target. Thompson then cues up Marriott on the edge of the box, only for the shot to fly wide. Thompson is involved again, this time with a long ball over the top; Cameron brings it down superbly on his chest but doesn't have the angle to shoot. Remaining composed, he cuts it back for Moons, who has made an intelligent run into the box and smashes it home. Cameron proves he's more than just a battering ram: given time, he can make good decisions. It's a cracking Barrow goal and should have been enough to take the points. Should have been. On 101 minutes the defence switches off, and Blair, who couldn't hit a barn door all game, finds himself free in the box and makes no mistake, firing low past Winterbottom to snatch an equaliser. Give him enough chances, right?

It's a frustrating end, for sure, when we should be seven on the bounce. Taking a step back to assess where we are… I think it was Ronan who said on our last episode of Spillin' the Beans that we still have gears to go through and potential to improve. I agree. We weren't quite at it today, but we still looked the better side by some distance, and without that one lapse and with some more clinical finishing we'd have won with ease. We're knocking on the door of the play-off places and I haven't seen a single side who look better than us. Even this glass-half-empty, long-in-the-tooth Barrow sufferer thinks we'll be involved in the shake-up come the end of the season.

Next up is the FA Cup and that less-than-salubrious-sounding trip to Kent. Watching their one-all draw against Port Vale reminded me just how f**king boring League 2 can be. Technically better, for sure, but tiresome. It'll be interesting to see how our direct approach fares against the sort of side we were last season.
