Double Gloucester
Gloucester (H) - FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round - 17th October 2026

Cup Distraction in Full Bloom
The flowers have been in abundance in the Barrow AFC garden recently, praise dished out to all quarters as we got off our knees from our crap start and started swinging a few punches to let the National League know we’re here. But as every gardener knows, you have to be eternally vigilant against weeds and pests. And so it was that we took a break from league action to get up for the Cup and the visit of Gloucester City. The visitors arrived courtesy of their rugby club neighbours’ deluxe coach (imagine living in a place where rugby was the dominant code? Shudders) and a game plan to sit deep and hit us on the break. Murray eschewed the chance to wring the changes, paying Gloucester due respect with minor tweaks seeing Mooney and Alimi-Adetoro make their full debuts.
Early Promise, Fading Threat
The game started as we hoped it would, no sign of laxness as we fed Thompson and Mooney on the flanks, who in turn tormented their full-backs time and time again. Thompson sat his man down on five minutes and the resulting cross was put wide. Keep doing that and eventually we’ll make the breakthrough. Or so we thought. The first half seemed to follow a consistent pattern where we’d get into a reasonable position, but the final ball wasn’t quite good enough, or there was a touch of hesitancy instead of killer instinct. Benjamin brought a good save from the keeper after driving down the middle on 24 minutes, swiftly followed by Reid putting an effort wide. On 32 minutes, a Mooney free kick stung the goalie’s palms, but overall we’d stopped banging on the door, instead, we’d retreated back to the car and sent a text to say we were here.
Warning Signs at the Back
Gloucester had a brief flurry of pressure around the 35-minute mark, but their own lack of quality up front prevented them from getting that precious breakthrough. A few chances in quick succession ended either in an offside flag or being easily dealt with by Winterbottom.
Verbal Weedkiller Required
The half petered out and we went in all square. Head gardener Murray would surely be applying the verbal weedkiller to ensure our seeds of creativity would come to fruition.
Flat Restart and Missing Spark
No changes to personnel and, unfortunately, standards as the second half opened. We carried on getting the ball out wide, but the Gloucester glovesman wasn't overworked. For a player with good vision and awareness, Edwards wasn’t taking the game by the scruff of the neck and dictating play, maybe harsh on a young lad, but if you’re in the team you have to show why you’re there. Man of the moment Harper only showed fleeting glimpses of the threat he can pose, too.
Shuffling the Pack
The changes started on the hour mark,Mooney and the ineffectual Reid off for Cameron and Lane. Two up top would give us more to aim at, and Lane’s energy would surely pose problems for the resolute Gloucester back six. As it was, it was Gloucester who forged the next decent chance, with Dunbar hooking a shot over the bar from close quarters after a Winterbottom error. Whilst not yet in ‘fearful’ territory, veterans of knockout humiliations like Runcorn, Shaw Lane, etc., began to twitch.
Tactical Reshuffle
More changes followed, with Ward on for Edwards, and minutes later the increasingly erratic Latty-Fairweather was hooked for Amos, with Allen coming on for Harper. It looked like a 4-4-2 and a renewed emphasis on getting out wide and delivering crosses into the box.
Seeing Red
It didn’t quite work out, though. Whilst Cameron had a half-chance with a lob over the keeper, we still weren’t testing him enough. Gloucester were getting a few more counter-attacks of their own, and on 84 minutes Mikey Lane entered the ref’s notebook for hacking down his man to break up another break. That came back to haunt him a few minutes later when, after a tangle in the box, the man in the middle decided he’d taken a dive and duly dished out a second yellow to our loanee. I’ve not really mentioned the ref so far, but let the record show that he was crap. Really crap. But like pitches, weather conditions, etc., you have to deal with the refs as they come, and it wasn’t his fault we were so impotent going forward. But yes, he was crap.
Frustration at the Final Whistle
Five minutes of injury time were added, but by this point we’d collectively resigned ourselves to this being ‘one of those days’. Allen was brought down as he sought to leave behind his lumbering pursuer, and an excellent strike from Thompson was met with an equally good save from Kane, the on-loan Derby man preserving his clean sheet and his side’s place in the draw for the next round. As the hapless official blew for full time, there was a smattering of boos that I think were aimed in his direction, whilst the general vibe seemed to be that it wasn’t us at our best… but certainly not our worst.
Perspective and Tuesday's Replay
A Tuesday night trip south wasn’t on anyone’qs bucket list, but it’s just the next challenge we have to deal with. And it could be worse, we could be Kieron Dyer’s Southend, Pete Wild’s Hartlepool, or Gurpatwant Singh Pannun’s Morecambe, dumped out already at the hands of lower opposition.
Still in the Hat
So, we’re still in the hat for the first round proper, but whoever we are drawn against, it’ll be moot unless we turn up on Tuesday a yard sharper and more incisive going forward. Over to you, lads, let’s hope everything in the garden is rosy come 10 pm on Tuesday.
