Hornchurch (H) - National League - 15th August 2026

Swans are fainting

Even with the spotlight on them

Swans are fainting

See Urchins

The year 2026 and we've already hit more rock bottoms than a Flintstones sex tape, climaxing in losing our EFL status. A precious Fabergé egg that should have been bound in bubble wrap, put in a strong box and vaulted inside the DDH, instead we've chucked it over the garden fence like a careless postman. Let's not dwell. Summer gave us the opportunity to Ctrl Alt Delete the blue screen of death and reboot into National League OS 2.0 with renewed optimism. My own coping method has involved giving minimal fleeting glances at our preseason, to cleanse myself of the relegation stink. We signed some players, we won some friendlies and on a surface level things were looking up. Hartlepool and now Hornchurch has seen us scratch at the veneer and reveal that the deeper engrained problems are still present. Let's pick those weeping scabs.

I usually like to start a report by setting the scene, the weather, clouds scudding across the sky, golden sunsets, that kind of fluff. After a heatwave that's lasted since approximately 1976, repeatedly turning your reporter into a sweaty mass of flesh, it was comforting to see the weather gods straining every sinew to ensure Holker Street had a familiar cool breeze for our opening home fixture. We demand new boilers, not new air conditioners. There's a healthy looking crowd gathering behind the soon-to-be-demolished perimeter walls. A pocket of Hornchurch fans have made the journey for their first away game in the National League, many likely experiencing 'the North' for the first time. Your reservoirs, your slag banks, your pebble dashes, your world class industrial heritages etc. A recent episode of The Chase saw grandma's favourite idiot Bradley Walsh, Shaun Wallace and the contestant all fail to know that Workington was north of Warrington. Cumbria must feel like an arctic expedition for the Pret Set. Although there'll be some home fans pulling a Captain Oates today. More in that later.

Tactics and players

Hornchurch are flush from promotion and a comfortable opening day victory against Murray's ex, we have no right to expect an easy game, but still, a victory is expected. By some, demanded. You don't need to be Eileen Drewery to know how they will approach the game, sit deep - hit us on the break. We'll need to move the ball quickly, find a way to break them down and draw them out like a hot bath. Looking at the random assortment of names on our team sheet, I'm not sure how we intend to do that after viewing the names scattered on the team sheet seemingly at random. We've seen enough of Big Innes to make an assessment that he is not effective as a lone striker. If you watched any of his loan spell at Raith Rovers last season, you would have seen how effective he can be with support. We've got Jackson out on the left flank, which I can see some logic to, but playing him out of position in our first home game of the season is slightly head-scratching.

Despite controlling possession, we have an early warning when the Urchins have a goal Tipp-Exed out for offside. The referee's jersey looks a bit big for him, maybe he's lost some weight over the summer. We get our first real opportunity on 16 minutes when Walker cuts back to Smith around the penalty spot, but he donks his shot wide of the objective. Ten minutes later, Jackson looked to make amends for his odd positioning, drifting inside and whipping a curling effort from the edge of the area that beat the dive of the keeper but kissed the top of the crossbar on its way behind.

We are controlling the game but Nasta could have his hands in his pockets. Hornchurch reminded us they still carried a bite on the counter on 34 minutes, forcing Winterbottom into a sharp reflex stop down at his near post after a whipped delivery caused a scramble across the six-yard box. Nasta is finally given occasion to earn his Miller and Carter steak dinner when MJ Williams' cross-cum-shot requires diversion on 40 minutes. A reasonably solid 45 minutes of football, but that's no goal in 135 minutes. Penetration? We've not even had a kiss and cuddle.

Familiar Full Collapse

Despite us flaccidly trying to thumb in a goal, the half-time chatter is still one of optimism. It has the feel of a game where we'll get a clear-cut opening and grab a one-nil at some point. We'll get the goal alright, but not the points.

We get a warning early in the second half when MJ Williams fails to deal with a loose ball in midfield and Hornchurch break quickly, Hearn having his shot blocked by Kalambayi. Sloppy, indecisive play from Benjamin sees him give the ball away in a defensive area on 57 minutes. A cross into the area is half dealt with and the ball rolls out to Kizzi, who releases a monstrous thunderbastard from 30 yards into the top corner, only the net saving the Little Tony's Tyre Pressure Challenge equipment, discarded in the away end, from being obliterated (and Kizzi winning £100) You can't really legislate for such things. A National League defender usually hits that in the Rezza.

What can be legislated for is the largesse shown five minutes later when a Barrow free kick is aimlessly lobbed into the box, hooked clear with ease, and not dealt with by Oakley. Sandat breaks clear, squares to Hearn, who pops the ball past the advancing Winterbottom to double the Urchins' lead. Memories of last season are surging back like a bad sandwich.

Murray looked to the bench on 68 minutes, throwing on fresh legs out wide and switching the shape to push extra bodies forward. The change almost paid dividends immediately when a driven low cross skidded through a crowded six-yard box, agonisingly missing the outstretched boot of Cameron by a matter of inches.

We pull one back on 76 when a soft penalty is awarded. Cameron steps up for his Mahoney moment but cracks the net rather than the crossbar windows. Hopefully this will give him a bit of confidence, as he is accomplished at much of his game, even if he isn't likely a 30-goal-a-season striker. You would hope that would be the spark that wakes us from our sluggish slumber, and we do at least try to produce an equaliser. Hornchurch tightened their ranks and run down the clock smartly, though they had their hearts in their mouths on 88 minutes when a drilled twenty-yard strike deflected wickedly off a defender's shin, sending the visiting keeper scrambling across his line to claw it away from the bottom corner.

Our best chance comes deep into injury time when a well-delivered Whitfield corner is almost bundled in. But it's not to be.

Reflections

Hornchurch deserve their victory; they had a game plan and executed it without much pushback. The National League is already proving to be cold and unforgiving and we need to improve quickly. I'm already questioning my expectation of having a settled team and accompanying game plan that sees us asking the questions and dictating play. We've won three games this year. Three. It's not too much to ask for a little bit of joy, is it? I'm seriously considering a more enjoyable hobby, like shallowly burying dog turds in an allotment or joining the Reform Party.

Famously easy fixture, Harrogate away next. Sort it out, Barra!
