Barrow Overcome Wealdstone at a Radiant Holker Street
Wealdstone (H) - National League - 3rd October 2026

Murrayball in Full Swing
To say we’ve turned a corner as of late would probably be something of an understatement. It’s more been a case of catapulting around a corner at high speed, and that’s just the playing style. The intense and physical vision of Murrayball is starting to become a reality just as autumn reluctantly tries to nudge its way in across the Furness Peninsula, and just as we finally start to recreate the sort of form that placed us in the upper echelons of League Two almost three years ago now. No disrespect, but the reality check is that Wealdstone are probably the most archetypal National League side imaginable. There is previous too: Danny Hurst’s sore head, Britt Assombalonga, paper-thin dressing room walls and all that. That was an awfully long time ago, as was when their veteran manager took Aldershot out of this division into the Football League with 101 points in 2008. The North London outfit are, however, not to be underestimated and have exceeded what were fairly low expectations at the outset, albeit their inconsistency means they’re unlikely to trouble the chasing pack behind Boreham Wood this season.
Team News & Starting Line-ups
As for the starting line-ups, there were two changes to the side that swept away Scunthorpe United here on Tuesday evening. One was enforced: Corey Edwards made his first start for Barrow in place of our suspended captain, Isaac Marriott, whilst George Walker came in for Keaton Ward in what appeared to be a similar system to the one we deployed at Roots Hall a week earlier. Rekeem Harper’s redemption arc continues apace as he was named captain in Marriott’s absence. As for the visitors, there was a distinct absence of household names; however, Olufela Olomola had a loan spell at Carlisle several years ago, which I guess is vaguely interesting to listeners of a certain local radio station.
A Fiery Opening
As top-knotted referee Matthew McQuillan got the game underway in front of a fine array of Wealdstone flags in the glorious sunshine of Holker Street, it was something of an end-to-end start. Luke Norris was being a pain in the arse from the off, I’m sure I’ve heard that name somewhere before? A man who scored penalties in two defeats at Stevenage in our early Football League days; I’ll take back what I said earlier about the lack of household names. In the 5th minute Wealdstone showed their intent when their centre-half charged forward in a Leroy Jenkins-esque fashion; they were certainly not to be taken lightly with this sort of carry-on. Reidy dragged wide shortly thereafter, and an Oakley ball across the face of goal slightly after that couldn’t be met by anyone.
Penalty Appeals & Early Clashes
What is a penalty anyway? It certainly isn’t whatever happened to Reidy in the 12th minute when he was pulled to the ground by whoever their defender was. I’d file it under "you’ve seen them given", but having made it clear that he was going to let most things go in the opening stages, there was probably little prospect of this referee, with that hair, giving that as a penalty, unfortunately. We go again: the in-form Seb Thompson dragged wide five minutes later as Paul Kalambayi and Luke Norris continued their ongoing wrestling match. Transfermarkt informs me that until February 2012 Luke Norris was known as "Luke Hacker", why does this not surprise me?
Honours Even at the Break
A lovely corner floated in by Corey Edwards found an unmarked Rekeem Harper at the far post, and the captain-for-the-day lashed home past Dante Baptiste for his fourth goal in as many games to put Barrow 1–0 up. Unfortunately, shortly afterwards, a Ben Winterbottom long punt forward was intercepted by the Wealdstone centre-half, who drove forward through a non-existent midfield and found Fejiri Okenabirhie. He teed up on-loan Walsall man and certified pain in the arse Ronan Maher, who had time and space to fire home an equaliser. The lack of Marriott and/or Keaton Ward in that central midfield space really cost Barrow in that moment as they were pegged back immediately.
The rest of the first half saw Barrow respond, with Corey Edwards firing wide and Seb Thompson being booked shortly thereafter, which prompted Wealdstone to take an unsolicited drinks break, just in case you were wondering how much authority the referee had over proceedings. Xavier Benjamin drove forward on goal very much in the manner of his namesake Trevor Benjamin, and Wealdstone centre-half Aidan Francis-Clarke was becoming as much of a pain in the arse as Norris and Maher.
George Walker received a stupid booking (which is very much in line with his lack of form at the moment), whilst someone very audibly swore at Luke Norris during some throw-in palaver over on the Popular Side. A shithouse tackle from Abraham Kanu on Corey Edwards earned him a yellow card, whilst a well-struck free kick by Seb Thompson was parried by Dante Baptiste, with the ball unfortunately getting stuck in Ken Digie’s feet during an attempt to follow up. Probably not who you want to be following up, but never mind, and that was the first half.
Second-Half Whistle & The Red Card
The second half got underway in a rather slapdash fashion, with it soon becoming apparent that the referee had undergone a personality transplant during the interval: everything he let go in the first half had suddenly become a foul. Annoying. In the 52nd minute, George Walker got through on goal, but a poor first touch let him down; shortly thereafter, a free kick that appeared to be bundled in across the line was blown up for offside, although several apps and DAZN themselves appeared to take some talking down that the goal in fact hadn’t been given.
The game seemed to turn around the hour mark. Barrow were starting to defend sloppily and gifted Wealdstone a corner in the 58th minute. However, Wealdstone attacking midfielder Dylan Kadji handily got himself sent off for a second yellow. Murray, already preparing changes, brought on Dan Mooney for the out-of-form Walker around the hour mark, and we immediately started to rack up chances against the ten men: Xavier Benjamin narrowly headed wide, and Reidy fluffed his lines after Mooney put him through on goal. Wealdstone took the unusual step of making a triple substitution whilst defending a set piece on the 65-minute mark.
Penalty Drama & Baptiste’s Heroics
In the 67th minute, a Corey Edwards effort was saved by Dante Baptiste, and with the ball pushed into the path of Reidy who was ready to follow up, the goalkeeper brought our number 9 down. A stonewall penalty that the referee bizarrely seemed somewhat reluctant to give. Ronan Maher pushed the ball out of Reid’s hands as he was preparing to take the penalty, pain in the arse. The penalty was struck left-footed into the bottom corner; however, it was saved well by the Wealdstone goalkeeper. Let’s file this one under a good save rather than a bad miss to spare Reidy’s blushes.
The increasingly impressive Baptiste then punched away a Mooney effort shortly after the penalty save, and followed up to clear a corner excellently soon afterwards. Corner, corner, corner, corner: Barrow were knocking on the door, but were faced with an increasingly congested penalty area. Seb Thompson won a free kick in the 76th minute which Ken Digie put into the side netting, a tame Mooney effort was blocked, and Corey Edwards, through on goal, elected to overhit the ball wide despite seemingly having all the time in the world to put the game to bed.
Big Innes & Murray’s Party Piece
Here comes big Innes, coming on for captain fantastic Rekeem Harper and wrapping the big yellow armband around his big Scottish bicep in the process. He almost had an immediate impact, having a header tipped over by Baptiste before a Wealdstone player hilariously decked it whilst attempting to take a free kick. Here comes Murray’s party piece: a triple substitution in the 86th minute. Edwards, Reid, and Thompson off; Ward, Lane, and Allen on. Not so much a throw of the dice, but the dice being violently launched onto the Holker Street turf. We started to make inroads, Allen winning a free kick on the edge of the area, which Keaton Ward made a complete Horlicks out of before Xavier Benjamin shot wide again.
Stoppage-Time Euphoria
Adding to the absurdity of the refereeing performance, the officiating team somehow forgot to announce how much added time we were going to have. Not only were Barrow frantically pushing for a winner, we had little idea how much time we had left to score it in. As Wealdstone’s defending became increasingly last-gasp, Marcel Oakley found Dan Mooney on the right-hand side, who whipped an enticing ball deep into the penalty area. Big Innes Cameron’s head found Keaton Ward, who bundled home for a 94th-minute winner in front of a delirious, sun-kissed Holker Street End. Get in there indeed.
Four on the Bounce
Four wins on the bounce, which would have seemed implausible in the extreme as recently as a fortnight ago, makes this run of form all the more impressive. Whatever words were exchanged between Murray and MJ Williams following the Solihull defeat have seemingly been the catalyst for change that has somehow propelled us into playoff contention. We go again next Saturday away at an unpredictable, yet seemingly good-at-home Tamworth side on their artificial pitch at the Lamb Ground. Like the string of results we’ve put together at Holker Street, this will be about backing up our excellent victory at Southend with something of a similarly high standard in the Midlands. Whatever happens, let’s keep hurtling around those corners at high speed, it’s good fun, this.
