A shot in the Arm

Aldershot (H) - National League - 19th September 2026

The Boil Wash Principle

On a business trip, a colleague got so drunk one evening that he sh*t his jeans. To protect the guilty, let's call him Frank. In fact, no one reads these reports when we win, so let's call him Giles Brandreth. The next evening Giles came down for dinner still honking of sh*t. He was wearing the same jeans. When asked why he was still wearing the befouled garment, he explained: 'It's fine, I tipped the sh*t out.' The moral of this disgusting tale: sometimes you can't just tip out the sh*t; you need a full-blown boil wash to remove the stink.

Holker Street Laissez-Faire

Anyway, on to the game at Holker Street. We've made two new signings ahead of kick-off, which have once again gone without the obligatory football club admin Inbetweeners GIF. Arian Allen goes straight into the starting XI, with Corey Edwards on the bench. A stiff breeze is blowing the last throes of summer from our memory and, hopefully, Tuesday night's performance with it. Last time I wrote a report the tannoy wasn't working; today it's the scoreboard that hasn't booted up, highlighting our determined laissez-faire attitude to professionalism. I know it's a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but can we issue some checklists or something?

Poisoned Apples

Aldershot are occupying a reasonable number of seats in the away end, but with the dour silence of a comedy club audience determined not to laugh. It's a long way to travel to sit with your arms folded for 90 minutes. Adam Murray was desperately close to fingering some culprits in his pre-match interview, but we'll have to pick our poison when deciding which bad apples remain. MJ Williams is suspended after his profligate double yellow against Solihull, so Harper makes the starting XI.

Wind to the Face

Barrow win the toss and elect to play into the wind in the first half, opting for the dubious advantage of attacking the Holker St End in the second. Isaac Marriott is deservedly handed the captain's armband, in lieu of the aforementioned MJ, at a time when the gaffer has said we need voices on the pitch and leaders in the dressing room. A truism for any club, but after the last year, one that's worth emphasising.

Winterbottom to the Rescue

Barrow start the game brightly. Harper skips past a player in the box only to see his shot charged down, then Danny Amos sends over a perfect centre onto the head of debutant Allen, who watches his header drift wide of the far post. Harper has another long-range shot which sails over the bar. This is already leagues ahead of Tuesday night. But let's not get too excited: Aldershot, with the wind at their backs, are feeling their way into the game. Their first chance comes when, wait for it, a ball over the top sees Tuma clear on goal. He's met by the onrushing Winterbottom, who smartly smothers his effort. I appreciate the risk/reward of a high line, but we can't keep getting undone like that. Aldershot have another great chance when a corner is met by an unmarked Stickland on the penalty spot; his fluffed header falls fortuitously to Dinanga at the back post, but Winterbottom again denies the Shots, getting down well to push the ball wide. When the half-time whistle blows, it's been a half short on quality but an even zero all, displayed on the now fully operational scoreboard.

Harper Finds the Corner

The second half gets underway with the wind at our backs, and Kalambayi seeks to use it to his advantage. He wins a duel in the centre circle, carries the ball forward and takes an audacious stab from 40 yards. Macaulay scrambles, but it's always going wide. Just after the hour, Winterbottom sends a long, straight kick upfield and Lane controls it beautifully, finding Allen, who centres. Aldershot hoof the clearance skyward onto the head of Ward, Amos takes a swing and a miss, and the ball lands at the feet of Harper, who sweeps it across goal into the far corner! Fu*ing yes! They all count.

Woodwork Class

A triple substitution sees Edwards, Mooney and Reid take the field, and Barrow take control. Mooney is straight into the action, linking up well with the outstanding Oakley to create a chance for Reid, then sending over a high corner which is met by Digie, who is unfortunate to see his effort bounce down off the crossbar but not cross the line. Another driving run from Mooney sees the ball finally arrive at the feet of Thompson in the box; he cuts inside, but his shot hits the inside of the post and comes back out. Oakley ensures we see out the game with his best performance in a Barrow shirt, and our second-half display could have yielded more goals. New signings Allen and Edwards both added some quality and attacking options, and a fully fit Mooney will no doubt bring some steel to midfield. This is my second match report of the season and our second win… not that I'm asking for any credit…

Building Momentum for Southend

I have to admit I was a little worried after Solihull, not by the result but by the performance. After today, well, does it feel like something is building? Maybe. Back-to-back home wins, this one against a team occupying a play-off place before kickoff. It felt like… something.

Southend are up next, and it will most certainly be a tougher test. I don't like them. Let's give 'em a kicking.
