Sutton (H) - National League - 5th September 2026

Fire is motion. Work is repetition. This is my document. We are all all we've done. We are all all we've done. We are all all defenses. Fire is motion. Is motion growth?

-Cap 'n Jazz

An hour of silence, please

Paul Hornby has been feeling something building. No, we haven't been serving Ryvita and Krisprolls baguettes in the hospitality, I've been feeling it too. We've had five games of footballing lethologica, searching for the word win, was today it? If it is, it won't be easy.

Before we dissect the dictionary definition of a game of non-league football, some sad news. Bluey has been kicked to death in a Hindpool back alley. He has been replaced by his more fragrant and better-looking brother, Bluey 2. There was an hour's silence before kick-off. Either that, or there's an industrial dispute at Spotify, as the only noise I can hear as I approach Holker St is a low grumble of voices.

Kick-Off: Early Exchanges

The teams take to the field in silence, Sutton in their traditional bile-yellow strip, and in a bold move, our gaffer has picked himself in the starting eleven. Kennedy Digie has dropped to the bench, with Latty-Fairweather starting on the left flank. We start brightly with a flurry of half-chances, but Sutton get the first real opportunity. A straight ball over the top is flicked over the advancing Winterbottom and bounces towards the gaping Sports and Leisure Centre goal gob. In a moment that would have graced the trailer for a Rory McGrath's Own Goals and Gaffs 1994 VHS Christmas release, now destined for a social media infinite loop on some faceless content aggregator account, Folarin somehow manages to send the ball over the bar.*

*On viewing the highlights, I still don't know how he missed it. A cataclysmic botch, and one Sutton will go on to regret. Judas Priest, Barrow, let's switch on!

The Lead

And switch on we do. For the third time on the bounce, we take the lead, on 18 minutes. A corner clears everyone in the six-yard box and an under-pressure MJ Williams gets in front of his marker and prods home at the back post, with goalkeeper Brits out of position and flapping flaccidly. Spotify have quickly resolved their dispute, and "Glad All Over" blasts out. Now, we've taken the lead in our previous two games and only gained a point from them, so this game is far from over, and underpants will, for now, remain clenched.

Sutton cut a big, strong side and look potentially dangerous, without really testing Winterbottom, bar the aforementioned act of preposterousness. Cameron is put through before the break, but is closed down before he can get a shot away — and, worse still, he's tweaked something. He manages to pick up a yellow before he makes way for Reid at half-time. The first of six yellow cards Barrow would accumulate on the day.

The Holker Street Faithful

The Barrow faithful have attracted praise from the manager, the players and staff, and it's easy to hear why. Given our start (at least points-wise), you might expect the moans and groans to be out in force, but the Holker St mob are in fine voice. A stark contrast to the last throes of our Football League debacle. I'm impressed. We have a potential cult hero in Adam Murray, who feels a good fit for Barrow. Snarky in a good way, and clearly driven. He has that certain something that inspires players to put their bodies on the line. Marriott is running the midfield, winning second balls; Ward has brought in some quality, and we are looking more and more secure defensively.

Second-Half Set-To

As the second half starts to form, it's Sutton who have undone their top buttons and put that defence straight to the test. We haven't been without our shaky moments along the last line, but today feels different. More control, and when things do stretch, there's an unwavering desire to block and tackle.

Blood and Justice

MJ Williams unwillingly puts his face on the line in the 76th minute, when Ogbonna cracks his mush with an arm, a sickening crack you can hear from the Holker Street end. The referee, who has missed everything all game, continues his stream of incompetence by only producing a yellow. Thankfully, MJ shakes himself off, sore but unscathed, to continue the rest of the game. Justice is swift and dealt in the most brutal fashion: straight from the free-kick, Walker surges forward and finds Isaac Marriott free on the right. He gives Brits the eye before smashing the ball home into the bottom corner! Beezer!

Squeaky Bum Time

Sutton aren't going to roll over and shit Mars bars; we've conceded some late goals and they still fancy a sniff of a chance. We pick up three yellows in quick succession as a mark of our resolve. A slightly nervous eye is cast over to the touchline in the 90th minute, in search of the injury-time figure. The fourth official must have nipped out for a tab, as it is unforthcoming. The referee is indulging in his ineptitude, allowing ten minutes of the stuff, which is great news for Ben Whitfield, as a goal kick from Winterbottom is semi-flicked on by Reid; a Sutton defender splats himself on the grass, allowing Whits to run through, clear on goal, with time to crack one past Brits into the receptive bottom corner.

Full Time: Job Done

So there it is. Our first National League win for a few years. Joy, relief, all that stuff. There are great scenes at the end between fans and players, and #TheGaffer regales us with some fist-bump-adjacent helicopter-arm action. It's all starting to feel like enjoyment.

The short hop to Worthing is next, for the half-past-lunchtime kick-off, kudos to those travelling on the 3am fun bus. If anyone deserves back-to-back wins, it's those stone-cold psychopaths.
